What pool LED lighting actually covers
Three layers, working together: (1) underwater pool and spa lights. Color-change LED fixtures recessed into the shell, casting blue or saturated colors through the water; (2) feature lighting: small LEDs embedded in raised walls, sheer descents, scupper streams, fire-bowl bases, and step risers, picking out architectural details; (3) landscape integration: path lights, tree uplights, deck-edge fixtures, and pergola lighting that the pool automation controls alongside the pool itself. The point of programming is that one preset turns on the right light at the right intensity in all three layers, simultaneously.

Fixture count for the pool size
Rule of thumb: one underwater fixture per 8 feet of pool perimeter, placed to wash the floor and walls evenly. Undersized installs (one fixture in a 35-foot pool) leave dark zones; oversized installs waste budget. We spec Pentair IntelliBrite 5G color-change LED, single-brand pad keeps the controller integration clean. White-only LED is rare on new builds.
Niche placement before plumbing
Each underwater fixture lives in a niche cast into the shell during steel-and-plumbing phase. Wiring is run through low-voltage conduit back to the equipment pad. Niche placement decisions made before steel are easy; after shotcrete they require concrete demolition. We map the lighting plan during design. Not at finish.
Color-change vs. white-only
Color-change LEDs cover both functional white-light needs (daily swimming) and dramatic color presets (entertaining, holidays, accent). At a typical 2–4 fixtures per pool, the upcharge over white-only is small relative to the budget impact. We default to color-change unless a client specifically wants budget-tier white-only.
Automation integration
Pentair IntelliCenter controls LED color and intensity from the same app that runs pumps and heat. Presets, "dinner," "party," "swim," "off", combine specific colors, water-feature flow rates, and fire-feature ignition into one tap. Without automation, color-change LED is a remote-control gadget; with it, it's a system.
Landscape lighting on the same controller
Low-voltage landscape lighting (uplights, path lights, pergola fixtures) wires into the same automation panel. The convenience of "backyard mode" running pool, water features, fire, and yard lighting from one preset is the single feature clients mention most often after the build.

How long do pool LED lights last?
Pentair IntelliBrite 5G color-change LEDs are rated for 30,000+ hours, 15+ years at typical residential use. Cheaper white-only LEDs from off-brand manufacturers fade or fail in 4–7 years. The long-term replacement math favors the brand-name fixtures by a wide margin.
Can I retrofit color-change LED into an existing pool?
Yes, and it's one of the most common low-disruption upgrades we do. Existing fixtures swap into existing niches as long as the niche size matches (most do, there are two industry-standard niche dimensions). It's a same-day swap on most pools, or a 1–2 day project if we're also upgrading the controller for app-based color control.
Are color-change LED pools tacky?
They can be, overdone, cycling rapidly through neon colors, they're cruise-ship aesthetic. Used well, a deep cobalt blue for daily swim, a soft amber for dinner outdoors, a saturated color only for occasional events, they're cinematic. The product is the same; the restraint is what separates a well-designed pool from a Vegas one.
Do LED pool lights work with my home automation system?
Pentair IntelliCenter is the primary controller. It integrates partially with whole-home systems via Alexa or Google Home for voice commands ("set the pool to backyard mode"). HomeKit support is limited but growing. Tell us your home-automation setup during design and we'll work out which integrations are realistic.
What does "backyard mode" actually do?
It's a preset programmed in the pool-automation app that turns on a specific combination at one tap: pool lighting at deep blue, spa lighting amber, sheer-descent water feature at half flow, fire bowls lit, deck-edge LED on at 60%, landscape uplighting on. Every household sets up their own. The reason it's worth doing is that the lighting is wired in enough layers — pool, spa, features, deck, yard — to make a one-tap preset like that possible.
