What a pebble finish is
Pebble finishes are interior pool surfaces made from natural pebble aggregate (or crushed glass in premium versions) bonded with cement. The pebble is exposed at the surface through a water-wash or acid-wash process at installation. The result is a textured, multi-color surface: visually deeper than smooth plaster, more durable, and less susceptible to staining and etching.

Pick the pebble size for the feel you want
Standard pebble finish has visible pebble texture, satisfying on feet but noticeable when kids play. Mini-pebble uses smaller aggregate for a smoother feel, approaching plaster. Glass beads are the smoothest premium option with the shimmer of glass. Pick based on how the pool will be used.
Color choice affects water appearance
Darker pebble colors (blues, blacks) make water look deeper and richer. Lighter colors (tans, whites) brighten the pool. The finish color is 60% of the perceived water color, tile is the other 40%. We coordinate both choices together.
Proper application temperature
Pebble is applied in one continuous session, usually 4–6 hours of work by a specialty crew. Outside air temperature matters (50–90°F ideal; hotter speeds cure, slower gives more working time). We schedule install for appropriate weather windows.
Water-wash exposure
After the pebble sets, the surface is water-washed to expose the aggregate. This is where craftsmanship matters, too little exposure leaves a dull cement-heavy surface; too much washes out the binder matrix. We use installers with decades of experience calibrating this.
10-day startup with daily chemistry
Pebble surfaces require a careful startup, daily pH and calcium hardness adjustment for 10 days, brushing twice daily to remove surface dust. Rushing the startup compromises long-term durability. We own this process for every pool we build.

How long does pebble pool finish last?
Properly installed pebble finishes last 15–20 years in the Inland Empire, often longer with good water chemistry maintenance. Compare to traditional plaster's 7–10 year typical life. The extra life alone usually justifies the cost premium.
Is pebble rough on feet?
Standard pebble finish has noticeable texture, think of it like fine gravel underfoot. Not painful but present. Mini-pebble is smoother. If smoothness matters (kids' feet, barefoot entertaining), go mini. If you don't mind texture, standard is fine and slightly cheaper.
Does pebble stain or fade?
Pebble resists staining much better than plaster, the natural pebble aggregate is mineral and doesn't absorb contaminants the way cement-based plaster does. Mineral staining (calcium carbonate) can occur on any finish with imbalanced water chemistry; on pebble it's cosmetic and usually buffs out. True fading is rare over 15+ years.
Can you put pebble finish on a pool remodel?
Yes, pebble is the most common remodel finish upgrade. We chip out the existing plaster, repair any shell damage, bond coat the shell, and apply new pebble. Done in 2–3 days of work; startup takes another 10 days of chemistry.
